DD Thankees and Watchmen Review..Kinda.

Journal Entry: Sat Mar 7, 2009, 3:22 PM
I'm ashamed to admit that today I have a hangover. My hangovers usually consist of all-over body pain that leaves me completely useless physically and mentally, so good luck to all those reading this journal.

Needless to say, I am never drinking again...at least until the next time.

So I come onto my page and don't even notice my pageview count has gone up a bit. I only noticed I got a DD when I read one of the comments saying 'congrats on your DD'. It took me a good few minutes before the lighbulb (forty watt, not very bright) flickered on over my head, which feels a bit numb at the moment.

So thank you soooo much and a great big hug to :icon$spinegrinder: who submitted it for a DD. Much love to you man. I won't be hugging you too tight for fear my arms will fall off...very fragile at the moment :)

Also thank you to everyone who has left comments and faved (not just the DD, but everything else as well) You're truly lovely, beautiful people. I'd tear up at this point...my legs are going numb.

By happy coincidence the DD is of Rorschach Half-Mask which you can find here: [link] creating a segue that leads up to my Watchmen Review. I'll try make it short :D

I went to see this a couple of days ago and first impressions were like some kind of dream you've had that you remember was fantastic, but can't quite remember the details A.K.A- my memory is shit. Well, apart from the movie not having any sound just before the fight at the start (at one point Edward Blake (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) turns up the volume on his onscreen TV - still no sound XD - much laughter from the audience as well as WTF is going on?!)

Sound returns and the rest of the movie continues without incident. Firstly, it doesn't feel like a 2h 45 minute movie, it just kind of sped by, which is a good sign and of course knowing what is missing from it and also knowing that there'll be a Directors cut that fills in a lot of the gaps I'm sure I'll love this movie even more. The overall look is fantastic, the sometimes sombre and dirtily energetic New York streets coupled against pristine, clinical interior sets of Dr. Manhattans lab and Veidt's office works well in contrast. There is a sense of choppy scene changes but frankly with the vast amount of information in the source material, I'm stunned that they managed to successfully turn what they had into a movie under 3 hours.

The performances from the majority of the main cast were brilliant. Jackie Earle Haley as Rorschach/Walter Kovacs was a revelation. (Also helps he's my favourite character :) ) There were some dud turns as well which either fall flat or are hammed up to the extreme, mostly from secondary and minor characters but hey hum..you take the good with the bad and I didn't mind it so much, especially because most of the performances were top-notch.

I need to see this film again as I suspect that (like the Graphic Novel/comic series - pick one) enjoyment will be heightened with repeat viewings. There are some things that the movie added and subtracted to either great effect or it falls flat. Hell, I'm just going to list 'em.

The change to the Grice scenario where Rorschach is investigating a little girl's dissapearance I liked. It was short but seeing Rorschach pace back and forth, turning and twitching as his sanity is crumbling was a stand out. The cleaver in the head, although gruesome is a shocking moment and should be, so yeah, thumbs up for that.

The ending I thought needed to engage the audience a bit more. With more time in the movie, showing characters like the Bernies and more of Malcolm long would give more of an emotional punch to the horror that befalls them. As it is now, the impact is on the city and it's buildings, but not really on the human loss that occurs. It doesn't have to include bloody limbs strewn about the place just some kind of attachment to the inhabitants that were lost.

Now I can stomach blood and gore, what I dislike is lingering shots of mutilation (we get the point already!). I mentioned the cleaver shot was shocking and rightly so, and the Dr. Manhattan's-I'll-turn-this-human-inside-out was alright to show his power and his distance from any emotion that might be caused when such nastiness occurs-fine. However, showing an compound fracture in gory detail didn't do anything for me, neither did sawing arms off and keeping the camera lingering on the shot. Just showing Walter's vest sprayed with blood would have given the audience a clue as to what Big Figure was doing with his lackey. I didn't think it needed to be shown.

I enjoyed the music and the sex scene was silly but not overdone. My biggest complaint really is that the film needed to be longer.

Overall, aside from a few little rants I've already mentioned I thought it was a fantastic film, and I left the theatre with a big smile on my face and a bladder that was screaming to be used.

Oh and I'm doing a poll to see what you thought of the movie :)

Thank you and buh-bye for now.

Congratulations!
Hm, I thought that the sex scene was ridiculous, hahah.
I dunno how I feel about that movie...
I liked it, but at the same time, I hated a lot of it.
There were good moments, and awful moments.

I didn't like how they changed the Blaire Roche Investigation scene, though. I thought it was more meaningful when Rorschach watches the building burn and listens to the kidnapper scream.
That quick-'n-easy death wasn't terrible enough, I felt. Maybe I'm just weird, but that monster needed to die horribly and slowly for what he did. Plus, they implied that he was a pedophile, and they didn't say that it was a mistake, unlike in the book. D:
:iconmanicouch:
And I agree, JEH's acting was superb. It was the best. Daniel was great as well.
Rorschach seemed more human, which I really liked.
I also liked how they had Daniel witnessing his final scene.
:iconmoyayuki:
So, the movie was gory? What other film(s) would you compare the amount of gore to, in your opinion? I might want to go see the movie (even though I've never read the comics) but I want to at least have a good idea of what I'll be getting into. Like, is the gore like "300", which I think was made by the same movie people, or is it more "realistic"? I'd like to know this information . . . ^^; (BTW, I was okay with the violence in "300". That didn't bother me b'c there was not an overuse of blood)

Thank you.

Well, I'd read a lot of reviews about the sex scene being unbelievably camp and pornographic and so when I eventually saw it, it didn't last as long as I thought it would and although it was camp (very) it didn't really bother me.

I would have liked more backstory too with the Blair Roche case. It was done far too quickly and it's unfortunate that Rorschach giving Grice a choice was changed (Is this because of Saw? I haven't seen it so I don't know)I would have liked to have seen him burn the building and 'streets stank of fire' monologue. I'm hoping that will be in the DC. There are lots of stuff I would have liked to have seen included and some bits shortened...The ones that stood out I mentioned but there are others. I think this is the problem when you know of the source material it comes from

Oh blimey, now you ask...I don't know really. The biggest amount of blood and gore i've seen was in the movie 'Braindead'. It's not as bloody as that :D

There were a couple of scenes when I wanted to turn my head away but didn't. I haven't seen 300 (yet..I'm really going to have to see this movie at some point) so I can't compare.

Okay, for an example in this movie you see a circular saw burrowing into a man's arms...you see the blood spray. Another is a man's exploded innards hanging from the ceiling, including his detached arm stuck up there and swinging. There are only 3 or four gory scenes like this, so it doesn't happen all the time and it is effective, but imo some was overdone.

Congrats my friend on the DD!!! It's about damn time i think. ;)

I agree completely with your review of the film. Most of my sentiments exactly, and it does need to be longer. LOOKING FORWARD TO THE DIRECTORS CUT? I know i am!!! XD
And that chat in the club was probably the most fun i've had in ages. :happycry: It made me happy!

:iconozymandiasplz: Made me happy, in my pants....35 minutes ago.

Now, get some rest!

Great review! I adore the graphic novel, but am not seeing the movie because I can't handle the gore. :( So annoying. It's my own fault - stupid irrational fears. But yeah.

Congrats on the DD! :)

My thoughts exactly! :]
I loved that monologue... I wish they didn't cut it. It was my favorite part.
And I wish they didn't condense the psychology session to one. I would have liked to see the psychologist descend into madness like in the original.
Oh, well. I knew it wasn't going to be perfect.
If Snyder didn't like slow-mo so much, he would've had a lot more time so that he could add in more scenes!

I hope the Director's Cut will be a great improvement. I can't wait for Black Freighter and Under The Hood to come out, as well. :]
:iconsullen-skrewt:
Hahah, aww thank you sweet Serrifth.

The Directors cut I'm really looking forward too. I loved this movie, but with extra bits it can only be more awesome. I really hope they include more of the Bernies though...just those too will have me weeping at their demise in the end

Oh man, that was the funniest chat ever XD. Of course, now you know I had a bit too much too drink and so I'm using that for my excuse in case I said anything that'll come back and bite me on the ass.

:iconozymandiasplz: Mmmmm...assbiting. *creates new folder* XD.

:iconrorschachplz: Definately homosexual. Absolutely no need to investigate further.

I need rest. My body is swearing at me. My kidneys are chastizing me and my aching head is saying 'I told you so, you soft bastard'. XD

Thank you  I would have wrote more but my body aches and almost half-asleep :D

I don't think it's irrational to fear gore...quite a sensible fear really when you think about it. The only thing I would say is if you do see the movie turn your head:

Whenever Dr. Manhattan points at something
When you see a circular saw
when you see a cleaver
The whole alley fight scene.

That's all the gory bits I can remember at the moment. At the same time, the Graphic Novel will always be top dog..tis true.
