Darth Vader by sullen-skrewt Darth Vader by sullen-skrewt
This was the Vader commission pic I was working on for...ever. It was on 1 metre squared canvas and the blending drove me mad.

The colours in the pic (well, the red) isn't really the correct colour and you would not believe the amount of black acrylic I got through.

Said I'd upload it and so here it is.

*Edited in order to spell Vader correctly*

I've uploaded a photo showing Vader on my wall. Hopefully, it gives some idea of the size of it: [link]

This is so menacing, I can almost feel the eerie prescence of his death grip. Awesome. Hopefully you can get out of the room after this, but I think your art is amazing. Thank you for showing your creativity.

This is absolutely amazing and I don't know how you had the patience to do this.
Hey umm... on Halloween I carved this picture on a pumpkin and I couldn't find it on the site again till now to ask permission to do so since it's your picture not mine. Am I allowed to post a picture of my pumkin as long as I say that the original picture is yours?

you did a lot better than me. i got too lazy to paint the horizontal bars between his triangle (breathing unit idk)
i thought it would be an easy art project lol. oh, any idea on how i can get it stop looking so...pink? its really not Vader's color. i tried mixing red, white, and orange to do the trick, but its just not quite right. or maybe its me. i feel your pain.

XD I don't blame you, the bars were a nightmare to do. Yep, it's a deceptive bleeder. You think it's going to be sooo easy to do because of the lack of detail...WRONG! I thought exactly the same thing. I think the red I used was crimson with a touch of yellow, maybe try yellow ochre. The blending is the worst part though, so good luck with that.

Yours sympathetically,

Sullen ;)

I'm loving the simple colors in this. Black, red, and a bit of white really make the intensity of the picture. Plus Vader doesn't really fit the soft and squishy type pictures XD so the sharp angle of his face (helmet really) is a great touch :3 Love it!

Hello there! Thanks mate.

It was originally supposed to take no time at all to paint this bleeder. I didn't take the blending horror into account and my smug bastard facade was quickly erased

I like how the painting has such a big negative space. It makes the highlights pop like crazy. And the palate is so simple, and clean looking. What is the technique for achieving that kind of blending?

Thank you. The blending was achieved simply with a lot of water and layering. The red blending into the white just outside the edge of the mask was the most difficult to render and I spent pretty much all of my time trying to get it correct. I tried using a sponge to blend and that really didn't work for me, so I used a large flat brush to smooth the colours together (watered down and repainted many times). Smaller spots on the mask that needed blending was achieved using the same method with the paint rubbed into the canvas with my finger before it dried.

So that's pretty much it. There's no special technique as such, just a smooth flat brush, water, my finger and countess hours of layering. :)

Wonderful, though. Technique is important, and acrylic is an incredibly challenging medium. But you've inspired me to try again.

Thank you. Funnily enough, it wasn't so much the size that presented problems, but the amount of blending I had to do on it. :faint:
